About NASDAQ Canada
The introduction of the NASDAQ Canada Market is a step in the expansion of
NASDAQ to international markets. By linking the Canadian and U.S. markets,
NASDAQ Canada offers investors a
transparent, fair and technologically advanced market. The companies traded on
the NASDAQ Canada market represent a broad cross-section of industries,
including those of technology, consumer products, pharmaceuticals and
multimedia.
NASDAQ Canada is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The NASDAQ Stock Market Inc.
NASDAQ Canada was created on November 21st, 2000, to extend NASDAQ's trading
platform within Canada by enhancing and ensuring immediate trading access
(including real time availability of all relevant data) by Canadian investors to
all NASDAQ securities and issuers and the ability to raise capital more
efficiently. Initially, NASDAQ Canada was regulated jointly by the NASDR and the
Quebec Securities Commission (CVMQ). I established its office in Montreal,
Quebec, Canada. Helen Kearns was the first President of NASDAQ Canada.
On July 2004, NASDAQ announced the closing of NASDAQ Canada's Montreal office.
An announcement stated that, "In order to integrate its strategic efforts in
the U.S. and Canadian markets, going forward NASDAQ's strong dealer
relationships in Quebec, British Columbia, and Ontario will be actively
supported from NASDAQ's New York and Chicago offices. In conjunction with this
change, NASDAQ's Montreal office will be closed". Since then, NASDAQ
Canada's operations have been managed from New York City.
NASDAQ Canada enabled Canadian firms to trade the 5,000 NASDAQ-listed companies
directly through their local broker, including the 42 Canadian companies
previously listed solely on the NASDAQ U.S. In December, 2000, 146 Canadian
companies were listed on the NASDAQ.
The NASDAQ Canada Index (^CDN) was
created when NASDAQ Canada was formed in 2000.
NASDAQ is considered to be the largest U.S. electronic stock market. With more
then 3,000 companies, it trades more shares per day than any other U.S. market.
It covers all areas of business, including those engaged in technology,
retailing, communications, transportation, media, biotechnology and financial
services. At present NASDAQ is the primary market used for trading NASDAQ-listed
stocks.
